In this video, I’ll show you how to create a child theme in WordPress.

Notes: Create a child-theme in WordPress.

What is a child theme & why do we need it?

Well, a child theme inherits the functionality and styling of another theme, called the parent theme. So the recommended way of modifying an existing theme.

Why you would want to use a child theme:
  • If you modify a theme directly and it is updated, then your modifications may be lost. By using a child theme you will ensure that your modifications are preserved.
  • Using a child theme can speed up development time.
  • Using a child theme is a great way to learn about WordPress theme development.

The location – first of all you have to open /wp-content/themes/ in your WordPress installation folder and create a new folder for your child theme as in video, I created a folder named “twentyseventeen-child” just appended with ‘-child’. You can name it whatever you want.

Create following files:

  • style.css
  • functions.php
  • screenshot.png

As referenced in video find here-down souce code:

style.css

functions.php

You can download the child theme that I’ve created “twentyseventeen-child” from this link.
